The Palatine

A Durham hearth, warmed by the Mediterranean sun. Honest North East cooking meets the olive groves — under one roof, at one table.

Our Story

Palatine opened on Silver Street in 2019, in a 200-year-old stone building a stone's throw from the river. It was built on a simple idea: the warmth of a North East kitchen doesn't have to choose between a Sunday roast and a plate of olives, oil and good bread.

The Oak

Our name's first half is the room itself — reclaimed oak tables, a wood-fired hearth, dry-cured bacon and slow braises that owe everything to County Durham's farms and butchers. It's the food we grew up on, cooked properly and served without fuss.

The Olive

The second half travelled further — years spent cooking along the Aegean brought back a pantry of olive oil, orzo, citrus and char. We fold it gently into the menu: a Whitby crab dressed like it grew up on a Greek island, a lamb shoulder that owes as much to Kleftiko as to Sunday lunch.
